The WTO rules-based multilateral trading system is in crisis, facing deadlocked talks on updating trade rules, redressing past imbalances and ensuring fair treatment to the poorest countries. Yet, preserving this critical global public good that is a strong and equitable trading system is in the interest of all countries. The WTO should be effectively leveraged in setting, monitoring and implementing equitable global trade rules supportive of sustainable development.
