Accounting Guidance for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)

This study provides insights that can guide the region’s negotiators regarding possible mitigation actions, outlining synergies and key ‘asks’ when negotiating for a fair deal for EAC Members in climate talks.

One year after signing the Paris Climate Agreement, 162 countries have so far submitted Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) outlining their planned domestic efforts towards limiting the average temperature increase to 2°C above pre-industrial levels. In East Africa, all five EAC countries’ NDCs tend to be adaptation-centric with some mitigation co-benefits, stemming from Africa’s enormous adaptation needs requiring US$7 to 15 billion per year by 2020.
