Taking Forward Gender in Trade Agreements: Any Role for the WTO?

In some developing countries, female business ownership can be as low as 3-6%, and the progress to close the gender gap on women’s economic integration has been very slow.

With the current rate, it would take around 170 years to reach gender equality (WTO, 2017). However, it seems that Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), either bilateral, regional or plurilateral, can play a role in tackling gender barriers both in developing and developed economies, hence, allowing women all over the world to benefit from trade.
